Hiking at the Edersee
Located in the home of the Brothers Grimm in North Hesse, the region around the Edersee offers a variety of opportunities for hiking. An extensive network of marked hiking trails awaits you here in an almost magical atmosphere.
The Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, not only offers breathtaking scenery, but is also home to numerous animal and plant species. There are up to 20 circular trails around the Edersee, located in the middle of the national park, on which you can explore the ins and outs of the dense beech forest.
Hiking in Frankenberg
Frankenberg is the perfect starting point for hikes throughout the Ederbergland region because it is possible to reach numerous day and long-distance routes from here. Designated hiking trails, fairytale forests and unique views invite you to explore. You can also find numerous premium hiking routes in the area which have been certified with the German Hiking Institute’s Wandersiegel (hiking seal) and which guarantee exciting tours.

Hiking at the Edersee: the Urwaldsteig
The Urwaldsteig Edersee is one of the most popular hiking tours in the whole of Hesse. The route takes you through wild nature and is particularly suitable for experienced hikers, since it requires sufficient fitness and surefootedness. The main route stretches for 68 kilometres and leads around the Edersee along the steep slopes. It is possible to walk the route in several stages or just walk a part of it. We recommend using the castle car park in Waldeck as a starting point.
Child-friendly hikes in and around Frankenberg
You will have a great time in the national park area even if you are out and about with children. On the “Eddis Edersee Erlebnistour”, you hike with the whole family on relaxed trails with low changes in altitude and short walking times. Along the way, you will pass various experience stations. The route also ends at the wildlife park, which is a particular highlight for the little ones. In total, the main route covers some 4.8 kilometres, although you can also choose a shorter 2-kilometre tour.
